…the new democratic government of criminals ….
Well, its 6th Sept 2008 and now our newly elected democratic government is complete with the new President and the Prime Minister. Its worth noting that both have spent some substantial time behind bars; no, its not like Nelson Mandela, these guys have legitimate criminal records.
Ironically, they are the democratically elected rulers of the state. That goes a long way in describing the people of Pakistan….at least a majority of them.
If i were to put it in one sentence….
“the majority of the Pakistani population chose criminals to rule them” …..and as a colleague at work recently reminded me…this is the ‘land of the pure’.

Well,
I agree with you Saud. However I would still back up a democratically elected criminal over an army general any day. At least they both are from the same party so hopefully government would have more stability and economy might improve.
Zardari got elected cause PPP won big time in elections, mostly due to Benazir’s death making her party more popular among masses. If he doesn’t deliver, they wouldn’t last long. So lets keep our fingers crossed.
The only thing that truly disturbs me is when a Army general uses his stupid powers to overthrow judges, mess up constitution and declare emergency only to stay in power. That absolutely sucks.
If you gotta rule a country, you gotta rule democratically not the way Zia/Musharaf ruled. I can’t be more happy he is out of Pakistani politics forever. He might have done a few good things, but that doesn’t mean he can rule the country forever. He should be glad he is alive, or he would have had the same fate as Zia.

Food for thought: To have the PM and the Prez from the same political party, doesn’t that give dictatorial powers to the leader of the party? (note: even in the parliament, that party has a huge majority).
Go back 9 years and u’ll see what i mean when nawaz sharif had passed the 13th and the 14th amendments in the constitution.
“The Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan was passed so that the President could no longer dismiss the Prime Minister; and the Fourteenth Amendment imposed strict party discipline on members of parliament. This allowed party leaders to dismiss any of their legislators if they failed to vote as they were told and made it nearly impossible to dismiss a prime minister by a motion of no confidence. In effect, the two amendments removed nearly all checks on the prime minister’s power, since there was virtually no way for him to be legally dismissed once elected.” – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nawaz_Sharif
So, is democracy really the answer for Pakistan???

It’s very true that some nations don’t deserve democracy….and perhaps we’re one of them!
Look at the mass population…extreme ignorance haunts! Most of the people can’t even write their name and when they’re made to vote, this is what we get…Gilani as PM and Zardari as the President. How many people do u think even know whats in the constitution, and what can be the implications of the ever new amendments to it? How many people do u think understand how economies work and boom? Most of us,even the educated, rely on whats communicated through OUR FREE MEDIA, which has been delivering sheer nonsense for quite sometime now…and the poor public, with the limited understanding that they have, blindly accept whatever the media has to say.
It’s such a shame to have Zardari as the President….i wonder how the world sees us now….’as a nation headed by a known criminal with millions of charges and several years behind bars’. How can we now break the international perception about Pakistanis being criminal when we ourselves choose to be ruled by a criminal? With the present situation and the current politicians, how can I be expected to favor DEMOCRACY IN PAKISTAN, if it takes the economy 9 years back? After all, nations outbeat others through a strong economy, not by reinstating fake democracy and begging the world to feed them. God knows where we’re headed….so much for democracy!
