Management for Dummies: To Control Consumption, Restrict Outflow
“New steps to reduce oil consumption: Two weekly off days, petrol pumps to close on Fridays” – DAWN 08-Sept-08.
In order to reduce the oil consumption, the govt. has finally come up with an ingenious (read mastermind) plan which is a real breakthrough. To restrict consumption, restrict distribution; isn’t that simple and wonderful. When people won’t have any oil on Friday, they will consume less (somehow..), hence consumption will go down (depending on the ’somehow;); the country’s oil worries have been solved
(again…somehow).
This gets better. The govt has also introduced another holiday hoping that people would stay home and save on oil. This is like icing on the cake. (Any more brilliant plans like these and i’m sure the day is not far when Pakistan will be exporting oil).
Dilbert should be learning a thing or two from this govt.

And thats not it..They have also estimated that government will save 2-3 Billion USD every year and hence our trade deficit or something will go down as we will import less petroleum products…:S
One great decision by our great leaders!!!

The extra holiday (mostly and perhaps only for government-run institutions) is aimed solely at reducing fuel consumption. The decision to not sell fuel on Friday is to curb people from filling up their gas tanks and going on an extended weekend out of their homes (thereby, spending more fuel, because, the two-day holiday scheme was put in place before, but it was realised that people would go on extended weekends to far off places).

…what makes the govt think that people won’t load up on Thursday or Saturday early morning..?? I really don’t see consumption decreasing in any case.
ironically, the fuel expenditure of the govt employees (granted by the govt) is not going to decrease.

Sure, they *will* fill up their tanks on Thursday, but do note that Friday is not an off-day. They will likely still have to commute on Friday, and with the petrol pumps off, they’ll have to need to fill up the tanks on Thursday. As for Saturday morning, people would much rather prefer to spend the day slacking off.
There will be a cut in fuel consumption, though nothing major, but, then again, they are no other pratical ways of reducing fuel consumption.

@ayaz: So when you say “but, then again, they are no other pratical ways of reducing fuel consumption”, you actually believe that this is is a practical way?
Imean, tell me about public transport. Sunday is an off day, but buses still have to be on the road. Talk about emergency services, and law enforcement agencies. Would there be no police patrols on friday? No fire brigades? No ambulances? This is how a call to Rescue 15 will go.
Ayaz: “There are robbers in my office. Hurry Up, send some cops here.”
15: “Can you please tell us the address”
Ayaz: “123, Somewhere, Karachi”
15: “Thankyou for calling, we have noted your address, and will dispatch a team early morning tomorrow.”
Ayaz: “Errr.. tomorrow? Are you kidding me”.
15: “Today is Friday, and we don’t have fuel today, because we filled up yesterday, but that only lasted for the 4:30pm. all calls after that have been put on a priority list for tomorrow. You see, there was no other practical way of reducing fuel consumption”
THIS IS INSANITY!
